Established in 1953, China Shanxi Folk Art Theater is the one and only professional province-based in puppetry and shadow puppet theater. It has over a hundred staff (personnels), including national first, second and third grade actors and actresses, musicians, playwrights, directors, composers, stage designers and puppet and leather-silhouette makers. The theater boasts the puppet masters Mr. Dong Xiaoyi and Mr. Li Junyi whose great reputation is known nationwide and has brought together a good number of distinguished puppeteers from various provinces and cities.
The theater consists of following four categories:

-The traditional puppet group (stick puppets)
-The shadow puppet group
-The Little Horn Team
-The puppet and leather-silhouette shop (where the puppets are made)

In the past 40-odd years, the theater has created and played over a hundred repertoires. With a rich list of repertoires the theater has participated in many puppetry festivals throughout China and acquired numerous awards.
Shannxi Folk Art Theater has toured Korea, Thailand, Switzerland, Germany, The Netherlands, France, Sweden, Denmark, Iran and Brazil. Their exquisite artistic abilities have been highly praised by local audiences and media.
