Tangshan Showdow Play Theatre was founded in 1943. It possesses tremendous art strength. The theatre has showed to many leaders of our state and many head figures and envoys from foreign countries and won their high appraises. "Monkey King Thrice Defeats White-bone Demon" is a excellent play performed by Tangshan Shadow Play Theatre, some scene of the play have been made into a film by Hongkong Phoenix Movie Company. Chinese Central Newsfilm and Documentary Film Studio once made an art newsfilm entitled "Tangshan Shadow Play". In September 1987, the theatre took part in the First China National Art Festival. In the same month, they won the first class prize of performing in the invitational competition of shadow plays form some provinces and cities of the country. In September 1992, the theatre was invited to take part in the Art Festival of 11th Asian Games in Beijing.

In 1982, invited by French International Puppet Institute, Mr. Qi Yongheng, a great shadow play master of the theatre, went to France, where he gave lectures and showed his skill to the experts of shadow play form 9 countries. In January 1985, the theatre visited America by invitation to take part in the "Disney World" Show in Florida State. Then in August, the theatre took part in the 8th World Theatrical Festival in Monaco and the 7th International Puppet Festival in France. Afterwards, by invitation, they visited the Netherlands and Japan where they gave visit shows in many cities of the two countries. Wherever the theater reached, she always won the people's high praise. The people called praisefully Tangshan Shadow Play "a magic, lighting-like art", they also stated that Tangshan Shadow Play "is the top of the world shadow play".
