Hunan Puppet and Shadow Play Art Troupe

Hunan Puppet and Shadow Play Art Troupe, founded in July 1956, is composed of puppet and shadow play performing troupes.

Having inherited the fine traditional art, this troupe has carried out bold reforms and innovations in puppet and shadow play, thus artistically invigorating the puppet and shadow play performances and winning great honour both at home and abroad. The shadow play was hailed by the French newspaper FIGARO as "the kind of shadow play which is more precious than gold. The puppet performances were known as" The kind of art that has already conquered the obstacles of languages and" special performing art and skills which are incomparable".

Hunan puppet and shadow play has formed its own special style with local colour and is well-known for the exact and steady manipulation, delicate and expressive performance, exquisite and lively postures, and lifelike images. Especially, the shadow fairy tale and fable plays fly their own colours and enjoy a good reputation both at home and abroad.
For international exchanges, this troupe has received many state and government leaders and has been invited to visit other countries. For many times the troupe has taken part in international puppetry festivals. The troupe has visited Korea, Czech, Poland, the former Soviet Union, France, Switzerland, Hungary, former Yugoslavia, Mongolia, Romania, Germany, Vietnam, Iran, Australia, Tahiti, New Caledonia, Fiji, Japan, the United States, Hong Kong etc.

In 1965, on the third international puppetry festival in Romania, the shadow play won the best performance award. In 1966, the troupe won the first-class medal of labour in Vietnam. In 1983, the troupe won the award of honour for the puppet show "JINLINJI" in Australia. In 1993, the troupe won the commendation of Wenhua new plays for "HUOYUNNIAO" awarded by the national Ministry of Culture.
