The Guangdong Puppet Troupe was established in April 1956. The Troupe has built up a list of over 300 original productions including traditional, modern and children puppet shows for more than 40 years. Meanwhile, the Troupe and Changcheng Film Company, a Hong Kong film company, jointly presented "Hibiscus Fairy" as a colored puppet artistic film in 1957. In 1959, "Monkey king steals the Banana Leaf Fan" participated in the National Puppet and Shadow Performance and got the Best Performance Award. In 1960, the Troupe representing China performed this puppet show in the Second International Puppet Festival in Romania and won a silver medal. Similarly, "Nezha Roars in the Sea" also won the Best Performance Award in the National Puppet and Shadow Performance in 1981. Besides, the performances such as "Monkey Ding Thrice Beats the White Bone Demon", "The Legend of the Arrow" and "Pinocchio" etc, won many awards in the Province and Municipal professional artistic performances.

In 1997, the Troupe was on tour to Eastern Europe and won the Golden Star Award at the Eighth International Puppetry Art Festival in Slovenia. In 1998, it participated in the Second National Children Puppet Art Festival in the Czech Republic and won a Special Award for the Best Artistic Standard and the Best Actor Award.

The Guangdong Puppet Troupe has produced and performed a great variety of performances which as popular for many years. In recent years, it was invited to perform in Hong Kong, Macau, Czech Republic, Britain, Scotland, New Zealand, Portugal, Singapore, Hawaii and Frankfurt, etc. The performances received excellent responses from the audiences around the world.
