The Great Master of Marionette, Huang Yique

It is fifty years, since Mr. Huang Yi Que began his career of marionette perfoming at the age of 13, in his hometown Quanzhou and Fujian. On the basis of following traditional rule of performing marionette, he added some new strings and made the four limts' joints to be active creatively. Thus, he brought life and vitality into marionettes. All the figures were improved and manipulated by him, such as the little monk in the "Flood Over Jinshan", the little grey elephant in the "Thousand Peach Rock" and the monkey king in "The Flaming Mountain".

In half of a century, Mr. Huang travelled to all parts of China. Also, he presented his performances successfully in Romania, Philippines, Japan, Holland, Hong Kong, etc. His three single-controlled string performances presented in the 15th World Puppet Annul Meeting, were acclaimed to reach the acme of perfertion. In recent years, puppet heads were carved to be attractive and vivid both in forms and expressions.

Now, Mr. Huang is a well-known artist in the international puppet circles. Some artists have come from Britain and Taiwan puppet troupes to study marionette performing from him.

Mr. Huang Yi Que is the honorable chief and director of Quanzhou Marionette Troupe, the national first-rank performer, member of the Dramatists Society of China, vice president of China Shadow-puppet Society and president of Fuijian Puppet Society.
